The Webby Awards today honored "Welcome to Gorongosa" a nine-minute video produced by the park, as an “Official Honoree.”
Hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet" by the New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including Websites, Interactive Advertising, Online Film & Video, and Mobile Websites. The “Official Honoree” award recognizes work exhibiting remarkable achievement.
Directed by Paula Aguilera and Jonathan Williams, “Welcome to Gorongosa" introduces the Gorongosa National Park Restoration Project. The project is a collaboration between the Carr Foundation, a U.S. not-for-profit organization, and the Government of Mozambique to protect and restore the ecosystem of Gorongosa National Park and to develop an ecotourism industry to benefit local communities.
"The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. 'Welcome to Gorongosa's' official Honoree selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."
"We are grateful to have been recognized with this honor," says Paula Aguilera. "'Welcome to Gorongosa' is a short film with a long-term objective: to tell the story of why a small organization with big ideas is saving one of the world's most unique ecosystems."
Vasco Galante, Director of Communications for the Gorongosa National Park Restoration Project, adds: "We frequently show 'Welcome to Gorongosa' in its various language versions and viewers tell us that they enjoy the way the film weaves together beautiful images of Gorongosa with relevant commentary from scientists and political figures. The film also uses Mozambican music throughout, conveying a sense of what it is like to be in this part of the world. Through this distinction, we hope more people will watch the video."
