The realization of a dynamic plan for the redevelopment of Chitengo Safari Camp is underway with the opening of new cabanas. We were honored to have His Excellency the President of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, as the first person to stay in one of the new cabanas last month. Double and family unit cabanas are now available, all with en suite bathrooms.
The development plan for Chitengo also nvolves the construction of a state-of-the-art conference facility for groups of up to 75-100 people, anticipated to be ready during the 2008 season. A magnificent restaurant, bar, and pool facility will be built overlooking a scenic shallow lake or "pan" with year-round
water to attract Gorongosa's abundant wildlife. A new visitors' reception building, visitor educational center, and additional accommodation are also in the short-term plans for expanding and improving the Chitengo experience for visitors.
Chitengo is one of what we expect will be several tourism centers at Gorongosa National Park. Other developments under consideration include a tourism facility serving Gorongosa Mountain, a hotel and spa associated with therapeutic natural hot springs found in the Park, and tourism facilities serving the beautiful limestone gorges in the Park's northern reaches.
We are proud that all of the projects associated with Gorongosa National Park are planned in accordance with stringent environmental impact standards by our
Department of Scientific Services to ensure that they uphold our promise of ecological sustainability in the Park. The development of new tourism opportunities in the Park is also coordinated with the local communities so that economic benefits of tourism are realized by these communities.
Stay tuned for more updates about improvements to the facilities of Gorongosa National Park and surrounding communities.
