TheGorongosa National Park(GNP)opened onApril 15thecurrenttourist seasonin 2010,in an environment ofgreat celebrationand filled withvarious cultural events.
Theaccess gatesto the network ofthe GNP safari tracks were closed sinceDecember 18 of last year.It isaninterruption thatoccurs every yearduring the same periodbecause it isthe beginningof the rainy seasonwhenrainfallfloods the plainsand makesauthenticmudroads, preventingthe movement ofall types oftractionvehicleseventhe 4x4 ones.
The eventwas characterized bytraditional ceremonies,the openingstatementof the tourist season,the speeches ofmembers of theGNP Oversight Committee, and theGorongosadistrict administrator,holdingtheOpeningSafari,traditional dancesand showing the film"Africa'sLost Eden".
Present at the event were District administrators anddirectors ofDistrict Officesof Planning andInfrastructure,Economic Activitiesand Education, Culture,Youth and Technology of Gorongosa,Nhamatanda,MuanzaandCheringoma.Also present werethe local chiefsof theBuffer ZoneofGNPand other guests,including workers andmembers of the managementof the Park.
Tradicional ceremonies respecting local customs
The Parkin respectto the habitsand customsof the region, organizedtwo sessions oftraditional ceremonies.
Thefirst, directed byChuva Camacho Nhanguo,took place onApril 14, 2010in the ruinsofthe oldtourist campChinongora,nowbest knownfor "House ofLions." TheHouse of Lions, built in1940, is locatedon the plains ofthe Mussicadzi river,10 km fromChitengo.This sitehad to be abandonedtwo yearslater dueto heavy floodingduring the rainy season.The lionstook over theabandoned buildingsstarting tobe knownunder the name"House ofLions." In the second ceremony,guided by JoãoChitengothe day after atChitengo Safari Camp, near thesacred tree, thetraditional ceremonyinveneration to the spirit of Chitengo,believed, according tooralaccounts, to be thefirst citizento settle in thisregion,probably early in the20th century.
In general, the twospiritual leadershave said prayersof blessingfor theGNP in order to geta higher rate ofrevenuecollectionin thistourist season. They alsoasked thespiritsof their ancestorsto protectworkers and visitorstothe Parkin relationto wildlife.

Opening statement Thetraditional ceremonydirectedby JoãoChitengo, was followed byspeechesand the declaration ofthe official openingof the Parknear the gateareathatgives way to thesafaris. The member of theOversight Committee ofGNP, representingthe Governmentof Mozambique, BernardoBeca Jofrisse,was the first toaddress theaudience.
In hisbrief speechhe referredthe worldwide successof the film"GorongosaNationalPark,Africa's LostEden" which has woneightinternational awards.The documentarywon theGold Awardin the categoryTV -Traveland the GreatDiamond Awardin all categoriesinthe Berlin Tourism FilmFestival,held from10 to 14March 2010,in Germany, wonfourawards at theInternational Wildlife Film FestivalonMontana, USA.More recentlywas honoredwith twoawards,includingGrandPrixAward andEco TourismAward in the Riga Tourism FilmFestival, in Latvia.

After,the member of theOversight Committee oftheGNP, representing the GorongosaRestorationProject,GregCarr,brieflyaddressedthe priorities ofaction for thecurrent year.He referred to thereintroductionof more animals,construction ofinfrastructure andinitiativesforfurther implementationof socio-economicand communityinitiatives at theBuffer Zone.

In his turn, the administratorof the Districtof Gorongosa,João Oliveira,called for greatercooperationfrom the traditional leaders and the communitiesin general in thecontrol of poachingandwild fireswithin theconservation area.

Finallyhe declared opentheGNPtourist season of 2010and proceeded tocutthe ribbonat the gatethat givesaccess to thesafarizone. The act was followed byan openinggame drive.
Opening Safari
Pesentation of the activities report In the afternoon, the Park managementpresentedto the guestsof honorand members of theOversight Committeea reportofthe activities carried outin 2009.
Generally speaking,the issues been addressed were related tothe influx oftouristsin the number of4,630, the creation of459jobs, givingpriority tomanpowerinthe localarea, including 46%just for the districtof Gorongosa,reintroductionof wildlife,implementation of projects forgeneration offamily incomeintheBuffer Zonecommunities, dissemination andpopularization ofthePark's imagenationally and internationally, among others.
In this sequence, the report was presented by theOperations Departmentmanager, ScottKipp, the Directorof the Department ofCommunications,VascoGalante, thedirector of the DepartmentofCommunity Affairs, Mateus Mutembaand the Director of the Departmentof Conservation, CarlosLopesPereira.

Visit to the camp and the on-going constructions After thepresentation of the reportofactivities carried outin 2009,the guests of honor visited the safari camp andthe construction works of twodormitories forChitengo staff.
They also visitedtheCommunity Education Center, where theyreceivedthe explanation of thestage of the workand the objectivesof the project.

Cultural activities The ceremony took placeamid greatjoy withtraditionalsongs and dance.
The Cultural Group"ChibangaMapaza" of Gorongosa, coming from thedistrictheadquarterstown,under the leadershipof JoséChibanga,gavemore lightand color to the event withgoodsongs anddance to the rhythmof the sounds ofdrumsplayedwith greatproficiency.
The artistsshowed theirmultifacetedtalent invarious dances,as is thecase ofMapaza,Djole and Nkhetekete.
At the time,GregCarrshowedup that he can easily socializewith anyculture andalso havethe feet abilitytoenter the stageand rehearseto perfection a few Mapaza steps.
The Park management inall its eventshas privilegedgenderactivitiesas a way ofpromoting cultural diversityand respect forlocalcultural events.
Theparty lastedall daywith lots of foodand traditional and conventional drinksto the soundof manysongs and dances.
