Art

The Sena people have a rich heritage of music and dance. Children grow up learning songs and dances and delight in showing off their talents. At official ceremonies and community celebrations you can hear marrabenta and other uniquely Mozambican styles with bossa beats and slow tempos played on marimbas and drums and accompanied by groups dancing and singing in harmony.

Visual art, well developed elsewhere in Mozambique, is less common in the Gorongosa region. Likewise, you will find very few decorative arts, only colored patterns in the sand walls of huts. Almost everything local people make—furniture, baskets, pots—though beautiful and skillfully crafted, is for practical use.

Storytelling is a popular pastime, but only at night. The people say that telling stories during the day makes your head swell. The stories include everything from personal experiences to mythical animals.
