The traditional communities in and around Gorongosa National Park are home to more than 100,000 people. Most of these communities include at least one market center that draws people from outlying farms to socialize, to collect water from a bore hole, and to trade goods and services. Each community has unique characteristics even though they share the same languages (Sena and Portuguese), religious beliefs, and cultural traditions.
CandaCovering an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers, Canda is one of the largest communities near the Park. More>
VinhoThe Vinho community is on the Pungue River, just outside the Park’s southern boundary. It is the closest community to Chitengo Safari Camp, where many Park employees live. More>
NhanguoNhanguo community is between the Park’s western boundary and EN1, the main road closest to the Park. More>
NhambitaMany tourists visit Bué Maria, the Nhambita community’s most scenic spot, to watch the sun set over the Pungue river. More>
