More than 250,000 people live in the 15 local communities surrounding the Park. One of the most effective ways to raise the standard of living of the area is to provide children with better access to education. In Sofala Province, an estimated 24% of children are have never attended school. One of the main reasons for this problem is that children often live too far away from school to attend regularly, often walking an average of 4km - 10km each way. Luckily the situation is improving, and the number of schools in Mozambique has roughly tripled since 1992.
Gorongosa National Park is collaborating with Mozambique’s Ministry of Education to provide better access and quality of education to local children. We are helping the Ministry to achieve their goal of building 100 schools in the communities surrounding the Park. In 2007, a brand new primary school was built in the nearby town of Vinho where today over 500 students attend. We are helping to hire and train qualified teachers, many of whom are recruited from towns many hours away. We are enabling these teachers to make a long-term commitment by providing them with comfortable housing near the schhol and the resources needed for a successful working environment.

To reach our goal of building 100 schools, we need your help. Every school that is built will give more children an opportunity to learn to read and write. They will learn the skills to get good jobs and be able to provide a better future for their own children and their country. All donations are tax-deductible.
