Mount Gorongosa is quickly losing its forest, and the entire ecosystem is in jeopardy. If the forest is lost, the mountain will no longer be a consistent source of water for the Park and its wildlife. Not only will the unique forest species of the mountain be lost, but without this forest, important habitat for the Park’s wild animals and birds will be changed forever.
As people move up the mountain to farm, the forest is being depleted. Traditional slash and burn farming is creating barren patches of land where thick forest once flourished.
We are working quickly on a solution and you can help. Local community members are being trained to manage saplings in small nurseries in their communities. When the trees are strong enough, they are planted in deforested areas. Local people are paid directly for growing trees, giving them an alternative to farming.
A donation of $50 will help to pay a tree planter’s salary for one month. A $600 donation will help support a tree planter and their family for one year. All donations are tax-deductible.
