The restoration and long-term sustainability of Gorongosa National Park depends on ecotourism. As defined, this is tourism that doesn't harm the environment, pays a significant portion of the Park's management and conservation costs, and generates income and social benefits for local communities.
Ecotourism is Africa's fastest growing industry and has tremendous potential for expansion. When fully developed at Gorongosa National Park, tourism will fund the park's long-term recovery and catalyze economic development throughout central Mozambique. The Park shares a portion of its tourism revenue with local community committees who spend it on schools, health clinics, and other infrastructure that benefits the entire village.
As an ecotourist visiting the Park, you can help make all of this happen! By going on a wildlife safari in the heart of the floodplain ecosystem, bird watching, hiking Mount Gorongosa, and swimming in the Murombodzi Waterfall, you will be helping to restore the Park and to improve the lives of local people.
Chitengo Safari Camp
Our Park headquarters at Chitengo Safari Camp is a comfortable base camp for wildlife drives and guided birdwatching safaris in the Rift Valley. We work hard to make your stay interesting and rewarding. Recent improvements include:
Nine new bungalows, giving us a total of 18 air-conditioned rooms with en-suite toilets; six garden rooms, with en-suit toilets and ceiling fan; a gift shop selling local crafts; and new safari game-viewing vehicles. We also have a new restaurant and conference facility.
In November 2011 the Ministry of Tourism of Mozambique (MITUR) and the Gorongosa Restoration Project (GRP) announced that the Visabeira Group - operator of the Girassol hotels in Mozambique and Angola - has been selected to manage the Tourist Camp of Chitengo - the largest Tourism facility inside Gorongosa National Park.
The new Girassol Gorongosa Lodge & Safari currently offers accommodations for 78 guests, a camping area and a vast network of trails for safaris. The resort also offers walking areas and many tourist activities within the Gorongosa National Park. The Park has been recently expanded to include the peaks and rainforests of Mount Gorongosa.
