Ecotourism

The restoration and long-term sustainability of Gorongosa National Park depends on ecotourism.  As defined, this is tourism that doesn't harm the environment, pays a significant portion of the Park's management and conservation costs, and generates income and social benefits for local communities.

Ecotourism is Africa's fastest growing industry and has tremendous potential for expansion. When fully developed at Gorongosa National Park, tourism will fund the park's long-term recovery and catalyze economic development throughout central Mozambique. The Park shares a portion of its tourism revenue with local community committees who spend it on schools, health clinics, and other infrastructure that benefits the entire village.

As an ecotourist visiting the Park, you can help make all of this happen! By going on a wildlife safari in the heart of the floodplain ecosystem, bird watching, hiking Mount Gorongosa, and swimming in the Murombodzi Waterfall, you will be helping to restore the Park and to improve the lives of local people.

Chitengo Safari Camp
Our Park headquarters at Chitengo Safari Camp is a comfortable base camp for wildlife drives and guided birdwatching safaris in the Rift Valley. We work hard to make your stay interesting and rewarding. Recent improvements include:

Nine new bungalows, giving us a total of 18 air-conditioned rooms; a gift shop selling local crafts; and a new safari game-viewing vehicle. We also have a new restaurant and conference facility.
