Education

We have two basic education objectives: To improve the local education system so children will have more opportunities in life; and to teach local people the economic benefits of environmental conservation so they will be willing and able to help us protect the Park and Sustainable Development Zone (Buffer Zone).

Basic Education
We are helping local communities build better schools, develop better curricula, and hire and train better teachers. We recently helped the village of Vinho build a new school and we are setting up computer labs in Chitengo Safari Camp, Vila Gorongosa, and Vinho where kids can use fun, interactive programs to learn basic computer skills.

Conservation Education
We are establishing a conservation education program that will teach the economic benefits of conserving the area’s magnificent natural resources. We invite community leaders to visit the Park, stressing the value of conservation and sustainable development, with the hope that they will become advocates for the restoration project and influence land-use practices in their communities.

We built a Community Education Center in the Park where local children and community members can come to learn about conservation and the preservation of the environment.

The Community Education Center (CEC) of Gorongosa National Park (GNP), one of the most innovative buildings in Mozambique, putting together ecological concepts, techniques and building materials and the use of natural resources, energy and water, was inaugurated by the Ministry of Tourism of Mozambique during the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of GNP in July 2010.

This infra-structure will support awareness and education workshops and seminars dedicated to environmental issues, including health, conservation, and environmental education.

The CEC is located in the so-called “Site 1”, area under the influence of the "Régulo Chicare" from the Nhambita Community, about 5 km from Estrada Nacional N. 1, on the west boundary of GNP and covers a 6-hectare area. From the total area, only 1.447 m2 are occupied with physical infrastructures, therefore keeping a balance with its proposed pedagogical and environmental meaning.

To know more about the Community Education Center please send an email to cec@gorongosa.net.
