Gorongosa is home to an astounding diversity of animals and plants—some of which are found no where else in the world. This rich biodiversity creates a complex world where animals, plants and people interact. From the smallest insects to the largest mammals, each plays an important role in the Gorongosa ecosystem.

Elephants of Gorongosa

The African elephant is the largest living land mammal, growing up to 3 meters tall and weighing 3,000-6,000 kilograms. Elephants play an important role in maintaining biodiversity in Gorongosa National Park during their 60-70 year lifespan. More >

Gorongosa's Giant Crocs

The Nile crocodile is Africa’s largest crocodile; it can grow up to six meters in length and weigh as much as 1650 kilograms.  Some say that Gorongosa National Park boasts the largest Nile crocodiles in the world. More >

Did You Know?

Both male and female African elephants have tusks.  Because tusks grow for an elephant's lifetime, they are a good indicator of an elephant’s age.
