Partners

The success of the Gorongosa Restoration Project depends on close collaboration between the Park and many different agencies and organizations. Here is a partial list of our partners.

Government of Mozambique and Carr Foundation
The Gorongosa Restoration Project is a joint effort of the US-based Carr Foundation and the Government of Mozambique.  The Ministry of Tourism is the government entity that has the mandate to implement the national tourism policy in the Republic of Mozambique, and to oversee national parks. The Carr Foundation, a not-for-profit institution based in the United States of America, has joined the Ministry of Tourism in the administration of the Gorongosa National Park in order to ensure that the ecosystem will be preserved and that a sustainable tourism industry will be established.

Catholic University of Beira, Mozambique
We have an 18-month scientific cooperation agreement with the Center for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the Catholic University of Beira. Our GIS program will remain at the university until we can better develop and maintain it at the Park. We are also collaborating with economics students conducting socio-economic surveys in the park and its Sustainable Development Zone (Buffer Zone).

Museum of Natural History, Mozambique
Gorongosa National Park and the Museum of Natural History, Mozambique, have agreed to cooperate on a variety of research projects, including Cape buffalo biology, the local bush meat trade, and charcoal production by communities in the Park’s Sustainable Development Zone (Buffer Zone).

University of Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique
We are collaborating with the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Maputo on botanical studies of Mount Gorongosa and the Cheringoma Limestone Gorges on the east side of the park. We are also actively recruiting students from UEM to conduct research and work as field assistants. The Gorongosa Research Center may serve as a field station for the university.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
The United States’ international aid organization (USAID) has provided support to build Gorongosa National Park’s 6,200 ha fenced wildlife sanctuary. Since 2006, hundreds of herbivores have been reintroduced into this fenced sanctuary with the hope of restoring the Park’s once abundant wildlife population. USAID is interested in supporting the Gorongosa Restoration Project in a variety of ways in the future, including projects related to health care, education, human rights, and conservation.

Government of Portugal
The Portuguese Government’s aid organization is helping to build a Community Education Center in Gorongosa National Park to provide education programs for local children and adults. The main objectives are to foster ideas of conservation among students and community members, and to help with the improvement of health among the extreme poor in Sofala Province. The Center, which should be completed in 2008, will include classrooms, dorms, a kitchen, an eating area, a tent area for larger groups, and interpretive trails. The team in charge of design and construction will use many of the elements of green design and sustainable architecture.

Kruger National Park, South Africa
The Veterinary Department of Kruger National Park has helped us relocate buffalo from Kruger to Gorongosa and to place radio collars on elephant, buffalo, zebra and sable to track their movements. We will continue to collaborate with Kruger on future animal relocations and research projects.
