Sanctuary

Completed in 2005, our fenced sanctuary comprises 6,200 hectares of ideal herbivore habitat in the Park.

The animals arrive at the sanctuary in trucks. Before they are offloaded, our veterinarian checks them for injuries and signs of high stress. They then proceed down ramps to a “boma,” or corral, a temporary holding area.

At the boma’s entrance is a corridor that can be manipulated to direct them into one of four small compartments. There the animals recover from the stress of their journeys, and our veterinary team inspects them more carefully, taking samples for disease or genetic testing and fitting some with radio-tracking collars.

After a few hours they are moved to one of two larger areas where they remain for a few days to further settle in. They are then released into the sanctuary and stay there to breed until the population is large enough and strong enough to roam freely in the Park.
