The Vinho community is on the Pungue River, just outside the Park’s southern boundary. It is the closest community to Chitengo Safari Camp, where many Park employees live.

Organic Farming
Twelve women from the community of Vinho have started an ambitious new market farm, working together to grow a variety of vegetables and herbs that they hope to sell to the restaurant at the Chitengo Camp. The Human Development Department of the Gorongosa Restoration Project is working to support efforts like this one initiated by local communities in the Park’s Sustainable Development Zone (Buffer Zone) to expand the use of organic farming methods. Organic farming can improve farm productivity and sustainability leading to increased farm income and healthier soils. More>
Health Clinic
A new health clinic recently constructed in Vinho can handle about 6,000 patient visits per year. It has a triage unit; a primary health care unit with an emergency department and examination rooms specially designed for children; a women’s health unit; a laboratory; and a pharmacy. Medical professionals assigned by Mozambique’s Ministry of Health staff the clinic. The Gorongosa health team is working closely with them to help provide high-quality care and education. More>
School and Computer Lab
In many communities around the Park, children are taught in one-room huts or in the shade of large trees. A school recently built in Vinho promises to give local children a better chance to get a good education. Its teachers are newly trained and it has a computer lab with an instructor who uses fun, interactive programs to teach basic computer skills.
